Lovelock Console Table - Black Walnut

Lovelock Console Table in Black Walnut

The Lovelock console table in solid black walnut and over two metres long, was designed as a feature piece for the spacious living room of a large house in Hampshire. Inspiration for this very innovative design came partly from the meandering river landscape beyond my client’s house, as well as reflecting on man’s attempts to always lay straight lines over the shapes and flow of nature as a whole.

Casablanca Cabinet - Ripple Sycamore

Casablanca Cabinet in Ripple Sycamore

In first sketching out the Casablanca cabinet design, I had in mind the presence and considered functionality of classical Chinese cabinetwork but I also wanted a contemporary piece with an almost minimalist aesthetic. The panels are veneered in ripple sycamore, the legs and rails are solid black walnut, and the finish is carefully built up with layers of traditional clear shellac, with a final beeswax polish.

Humby Oak Desk

Humby Oak Desk

The Humby Desk was first designed to a two-adjective brief - "languid but elegant" - from an interior designer client, whose project was a Georgian house near Bath full of tactile contemporary textiles and rich colours. Made in English oak and finished with Danish oil and beeswax, the desk has three drawers each with cedar of Lebanon drawer-bottoms.

Chantal's Walnut Console Table

Chantal's Walnut Console Table

I first visited Chantal and Hugh in their Oxfordshire village home to discuss making a CD cabinet. I suggested they instead fit a series of painted shelves for their CD collection in an available alcove – and was instead commissioned to design and make this elegant black walnut serving console for their conservatory dining-room.

Walnut Writing Desk

Helen's English Walnut Writing Desk

Helen's English Walnut writing desk was made for a writer of children's fiction. Her wish was for quite a small writing surface without drawers, but with a comfortable, curved and open form for long hours spent writing. Maybe it was because Helen was pregnant at the time I sketched out the design that I allowed plenty of curve in the middle. Made in English walnut with an oiled finish.

English Cherry Butterfly Chair

Butterfly Chair in English Cherry

The natural yet contemporary form of the Butterfly Chair was designed to provide both comfort and excellent lumber support. Constructed using traditional chairmaking techniques and laminated and shaped curved parts, this example is made in English cherry and upholstered with a brushed leather covering.

Contemporary Oak Desk

David & Gill's Desk in Oak

The shape of this ‘Space-Invaders’ desk-top was initially sketched out to comfortably fit into a bay window of my clients' study overlooking a walled London garden. Its curved but clipped form quickly led on to the evolution of the whole of this very unique, sculptural design. The legs were laminated from shaped oak, laid with figured oak veneer with ebony edging, while the desk-top itself is veneered in burr oak.

Ivor & Gill's Walnut & Glass Coffee Table

Fun, flexible, four black walnut ‘books’ support the glass top, and are fashioned like a large half-open paperback book!

Tamara's Walnut Dressing Table

Tamara's English Walnut Dressing Table

Made with English burr walnut, this suite was designed and made for a client’s open-plan Docklands apartment. With few constraints, aside from the overall dimensions, I was given carte-blanche by Tamara to come up with whatever dressing-table design inspired me. As often occurs, I designed and presented two very different concepts. "We love them both, make whichever one you prefer!" was their response.

Gill's Yew Dressing Table

Gill’s Yew Dressing Table

This suite in English yew was made to fit into the sunny alcove of a south-facing bedroom. Yew is technically a softwood (but very hard and durable), and I was fortunate in coming across some of the most beautiful clean boards at a small timber yard, from which I cut and laid my own thick veneers.

Johanna's Oak Hall Table

Johanna's Oak Hall Table & Mirror

Not only did Johanna & Vicky give me excellent coffee and cake on my various site visits, but shortly after the furniture was delivered I received a card from them in the post: "Just to let you know how very much we are enjoying our hall table and mirror. Every time we see it, it is a surprise and delight. It also looks totally as if it belongs and owns the space. It is really perfect. Thank you so much! Johanna & Vicky"

Borges Walnut Coffee Table

Borges Walnut Coffee Table

Beautifully-proportioned and visually-engaging, this coffee-table design explores the play between ‘the rectilinear and the curved’ within a rhythmical, repeating motif. Versions have been made using both walnut and oak, with toughened glass for the top surface.
