Jonathan Markovitz

I originally studied contemporary fine art at Goldsmiths College, London, an experience which gave me a tremendous insight into artistic creativity, and a critical rigour in assessing creative design solutions.

Sensing that my true potential lay in combining my creative interests with the skills of fine craftsmanship to design beautiful functional objects for real people and places, I left London and moved for a while to the West Country to train intensively as a furnituremaker.

I then set up my first workshop in Devon and dedicated myself to designing and making innovative contemporary furniture.   I also discovered an aptitude for teaching the craft and creative skills that I had developed, and began writing articles on furniture making and design.

With a developing portfolio of commissions for a wide range of clients around the UK, I moved a few years ago to a old house and adjoining workshop in a quiet village set in beautiful Downs landscape in south-west Oxfordshire.   I have since expanded and upgraded the workshop to accommodate a design studio and provide additional space for the training of adult students.

Design Influences & Inspiration

I am strongly influenced by the forms and rhythms of the natural world - from broad landscape down to the almost hidden details of nature - and also draw inspiration from a wide range of musical, scientific and cultural ideas.

Ultimately however, it is each commissioning client´s own particular requirements which lead me afresh on often unexpected but always exciting, creative journeys.

Memberships & Exhibitions

I am a Member of The Society of Designer Craftsmen and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Furnituremakers (for whom I sit on the Guild Mark for Bespoke Furniture assessment committee).

I regularly exhibit at various interiors and arts events around the country, including the International Art & Antiques Fair at Olympia and Decorex at The Royal Hospital Chelsea.
