Fine furniture maker, furniture making training courses, bespoke furniture, cabinetmaking training

After a successful early professional career in London, I returned to education as a mature student to study contemporary fine art at Goldsmiths College – an experience which gave me valuable insight into the creative process. Wishing to combine my visual instincts with the demanding skills of hardwood craftsmanship, I then retrained as a designer-maker of fine contemporary furniture – in which I discovered a synthesis of creativity and making, and a critical rigour in assessing successful design solutions.

I set up my first workshop in the West Country, designing and making elegant, often subtly-innovative contemporary furniture. With a growing portfolio of bespoke and made-to-order furniture for clients around the UK and overseas, I then moved to a traditional village workshop set in the gently-rolling Downs of south-west Oxfordshire, near the West Berkshire and Wiltshire borders. I enlarged and upgraded the workshop to provide space for students on my various furniture and cabinetmaking courses – as enabling adult trainees from all walks of life to successfully learn new skills and develop a creative, craft-based practice is a side to my work that I find profoundly rewarding.

Design Inspiration

I am strongly influenced by the forms and rhythms of the natural world – from broad landscape down to the almost hidden details of nature – and also draw inspiration from a wide range of other sources, from music and mathematics to architecture and ecology.

I have some enduring interests that re-emerge in new and different forms over the years – in particular the conversation between the rectilinear and the curved. However I like to keep my design instincts open, versatile and responsive – and it is so often each new client´s own particular requirements, and sometimes their own clear vision of what they want, which lead me on new creative journeys.

Memberships & Exhibitions

I am a Member of The Society of Designer Craftsmen and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Furnituremakers (for whom I have assessed applicants for various Bespoke Furniture Guild Marks).

I regularly exhibit at various interiors and arts events around the country, including Decorex at The Royal Hospital Chelsea, the Homes & Gardens Fair Olympia, the International Art & Antiques Fair Olympia, and Handmade in Britain Chelsea.
